Another great volunteering assignment is unfolding in Mattru Jong. AYM Vice President, Dennis Glover, arrived in Sierra Leone on January 29 with volunteer friends Christopher “Dude” Lankford and Spencer Noyce. The trio immediately set for Mattru Jong after a full day of shopping, visiting friends and sightseeings in Freetown.

This is probably Dennis’s tenth time coming to Sierra Leone on extended AYM assignments. Dude too has been in Sierra Leone for at least five times, each visit building upon the progress of the last visit. This is Spencer’s first trip outside of the United States and first in Sierra Leone. Hopefully, it will not be his last. The combined skills and talents of these guys is amazing. Our young volunteers are going to learn a lot from them as they have always done.

Since the arrival of the trio in Mattru Jong, the AYM Social Enterprise Center has been abuzz with activities – electrical upgrades, renovations and administrative duties. This six weeks volunteering assignment is going to further position AYM as a preeminent organization with a clear social mission for the community.

Can you feel our excitement?

In between work at the center and getting updates from volunteers, the trio also took time to pay courtesy calls on community elders and stakeholders. Their first point of call was the Paramount Chief, Alie Badara Sheriff. After that, they made the rounds in Mattru Jong. All in all, there is smooth progress – one that would have solid impact in the days, months and years ahead.

On Monday, February 3, the trio paid another courtesy call to the village of Mongerewa, the hometown of our recently deceased founding volunteer of the AYM in Mattru Jong, Foday Sheriff to meet with the family and further express our condolences.  Foday passed away November 16, 2013 and was buried in his village. Foday’s aging mother and relatives still live at Mongerewa.
